Ghita Nørby is considered the queen of the Danish screen and stage. Her career spans 60 years of work in different genres. She has played everything from the peasant girl to the Machiavellian stepmother. Yet perhaps her best performance was as a spirited middle-aged housewife in Waltzing Regitze (1989), filmed by Kaspar Rostrup. Reluctantly written for Lars von Trier’s absurd comedy series, The Kingdom (1994 and 1997), she showed all her comic talent in the role of the shrewish doctor. Stille Hjerte (Silent Heart), which had its national premiere last year at the Umbria Film Festival, saw for the first time in 25 years, Bille August and Ghita Nørby together – the last time Nørby had appeared in an August film was in 1992 in Palme d’Or winner Den goda viljan (With the Best Intentions), in which she had played Ingmar Bergman’s grandmother.
She has received numerous awards and honors including four Bodil Awards and the Ingenio et Arti medal in 2006. At the 27th Guldbagge Awards, she was nominated for Best Leading Actress for her role in Freud’s Leaving Home.
